Fonts & Typography.

Websites use different font styles to enhance readability. It must be considered how, something as seemingly simple as a font can impact a web page. Web development companies for instance Mellas(2016) note that the purpose “of your font selection or typeface is to convey the character or purpose of your website and content” emphasizing that the style of font used portrays the general theme of a website. It would be considered inappropriate for a funeral website to use a font such as Microsoft word’s Snap ITC, which promotes a fun text suitable for captivating the interest of young children. Using instead, for instance a Microsoft word font such as Georgia, an overall more professional image and interpretation of a website can be created. Overall it should be noted that selected font styles must be appropriate for the website in question.

When selecting a font, its overall readability should be considered. Poor font selections can make it hard for the reader to understand the text, which in turn, can lead to visitors being deterred away from a website, an example of such a font is Brush script Std. Though its artistic style looks visually appealing, it is difficult to read. As a result, few websites will use this as their font, as it can confuse readers in addition to generating an unprofessional judgement of their site. Wood(2011) notes that the most legible fonts to use on a website are Arial, Courier, and Verdana these fonts are critically simple to read and further empathize the professionalism of a website.

When selecting the font for Modus Novels a simple analysis was conducted into which fonts were preferred by peers, the results in addition to examples of these fonts are displayed below.

The analysis highlighted that despite Wood’s statement of preferred fonts, 54% of people aged between 18 – 30 preferred the font Georgia to be used on Modus Novels, when asked why they stated that they felt this font fit more suitably with the theme of fashion and design. These people further criticised the most legible fonts, Veranda Courier and Ariel as being too harsh against the websites theme and style. In conclusion, the findings above influenced the decision to use the font Georgia across Modus Novels.
